For most GM vehicles, it is under the vehicle, behind the drivers seat. On any car or engine, you can always start at the fuel injector or carbourator and follow the line leading to it backwards till you find any part of the fuel system your looking for, including modified ones. This should only take a few minutes and has the advantage of exposing any other things (like pressure regulators, etc) also in the system that may have caused a problem. Uh...this also works from the gas tank and following it forward...or anywhere along the system you want to start! True, if it's in the fuel tank, as some are, you'll end up, by elimination, isolating it to having to be there.

If the Bonneville is like my GTP then the fuel filter is in front of the fuel tank

The 2001 discovery does not have an external fuel filter. There is only the sock filter inside of the fuel tank.
Look under the vehicle along the frame - follow the fuel line from the fuel tank
If the car has the original Rochester carb on it, the filter is inside it. Follow the fuel line to the carb. There you will see what looks like a large hex nut. Loosen that and inside there is the filter available at any auto parts store.
