Loose steering in a Jaguar XJS can be caused by several factors, including worn or damaged steering components such as tie rods, ball joints, or bushings. Additionally, low power steering fluid levels or a failing power steering pump can contribute to the issue. It's also possible that the steering rack itself is worn or that there are alignment issues. Regular maintenance and inspection can help identify and resolve these problems.

The reservoir is on top of the left wheel well. But note it takes a special oil, not power steering fluid. The pump and reservoir are GM made. The black cap is located under the drivers side upper rad hose. It has a level indicator built into the cap. Just remove and add. A small skinny funnel is need to deliver oil as it is a tight fit.
Resevoir is on right fender, black plastic tank. Unscrew lid CLOCKWISE. ATF recommended.
On a 1988 Jaguar XJS, the power steering fluid reservoir is typically located near the front of the engine, on the driver's side. It is a translucent plastic container with a cap that is usually labeled for easy identification. To check or fill the fluid, simply remove the cap and ensure the fluid level is within the recommended range marked on the reservoir. Always use the appropriate type of power steering fluid specified in the owner's manual.
you'll find the power steering fill cap on top of the power steering pump that is located on the, in the USA, driver's side of the car, at the front of the motor usually under a radiator hose. if you can find the thermostat housing follow the hose back toward the radiator until you find the cap underneath the hose. mrclaudedancer@yahoo.com I've an 89 xjs that has aftermarkert cooling and have to fill the resivoir with a funnel as the cap will not come all tghe way off un less the rad hose is disconnected.
Mine uses castrol hyd. mineral oil. I can get a part no. if needed. You won't find it at your local parts store.
at the front left hand side of the engine just underneath the air con compressor is the cap and resevoir. NOT the red one, thats engine oil
The Parts Department at my local Jaguar dealership sold me a liter of Pentosin CHF 11S. However, since then the leak in the system has gotten worse, but I don't know whether that's attributable to the Pentosin or the Preston Power Steering fluid my personal mechanic used before I bought the Pentosin.

To remove the steering rack on a 1991 Jaguar XJS, first, ensure the vehicle is securely lifted and supported. Disconnect the battery, then remove the front wheels and the splash shields to access the steering components. Disconnect the steering column from the rack, remove the tie rod ends, and then unbolt the rack from its mounts. Finally, carefully pull the rack out of its housing, taking care to manage any hydraulic lines connected to it.
