The solar sensor is located on the drivers side of the dashboard close to the windshield. There are two sensors there (2 small round sensors)...while sitting in the driver's seat, the leftmost sensor is the headlight sensor (turns lights on/off automatically), the solar sensor is to the right of the headlight sensor. To replace the sensor, you use a screw driver to pry it out (be careful not to scratch the dash). Remove the old sensor, install a new one and put it back in its place in the dash.

On a 1998 Lexus GS 400, the solar sensor is responsible for detecting the intensity of sunlight entering the vehicle. It plays a crucial role in regulating the climate control system, particularly for the automatic air conditioning, by adjusting the temperature and airflow based on the amount of sunlight detected. This helps maintain a comfortable cabin environment and enhances overall energy efficiency. Additionally, it may contribute to the proper functioning of other features, such as the automatic dimming of the rearview mirror.
