I am having the same problem and what I have been reading you have to check it on the side of the transmision.. Also, be sure that your transmission is not the "lifetime sealed" unit which requires a special fluid that is not compatible with ATF. Recommend you check with an authorized BMW dealership mechanic.
The transmission dipstick in a 98 BMW 528i is on the driver's side of the transmission pan. Make sure you are parked in a level spot before you check it.

On a 1998 BMW 528i, the brake fluid reservoir is located on the driver's side of the engine bay, near the back of the engine compartment. It is typically a translucent plastic container with a cap labeled for brake fluid. To check or add brake fluid, make sure the engine is off and allow the engine to cool down before opening the reservoir.
Automatic Transmission Fluid /Dexron III or higher. DO NOT use Pentosin in this model. If you do you will eventually regret it.
On a 97 528i the speed sensor is located on the transmission tail shaft housing at the top.
