The trick is to check for a short somewhere in the electrical system. Here is what I found on my MPV: check the wiring inside the vehicle on the passenger side under the dashboard near the fire wall. The on-board computer (i.e., metallic box mounted right above where the passenger's feet would be) has a large number of wires going into it. We found a wiring union about 5 inches from the computer that was unshielded. It was shorting out against the metal case of the computer periodically, blowing the engine fuse. Use electrical tape to insulate the connection. (If I remember correctly, the wires were black and white.)

Check for a blown fuse.
In a 2001 Mazda MPV, the alarm fuse is typically located in the fuse box, which is found under the dashboard on the driver's side. You can identify the specific fuse for the alarm system by consulting the fuse diagram, usually found on the cover of the fuse box or in the owner's manual. If you're having trouble, it's a good idea to check for any blown fuses and replace them as needed.
