Yes it depends what kind of vehicle you drive as to where the fuse is located.
Check the fuses, if fuses are okay, it is probably the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) or wiring to it at fault.

The 2004 Mercury Monterey does not have a specific fuse solely for the transmission. However, there are fuses related to the transmission's electronic components, such as those for the transmission control module or various sensors. If you're experiencing transmission issues, it's advisable to check the vehicle's fuse box for any blown fuses related to these components. Always refer to the owner's manual for detailed information on fuse locations and functions.
check the fuses.
TCM is short for transmission control unit. It is under the dash, driver's side. It tells an automatic transmission when to shift. Fuses for the TCM are in the engine bay.
That would be a problem with the solenoid for the lock up converter. Start with checking the fuses. If the fuses check okay the lock up solenoid or wiring circuit is probably bad. That solenoid is located inside the transmission and can be reached by dropping the trans pan.
look into wiring plug on transmission (under area of transmission). I know this for a fact on manual transmission. auto transmission- i would check in service repair manual.
check all fuses first, the check transmission safety switch on side of transmission
