The battery in a vehicle is used as a storage device to store electrical current. This current is used to spin the starter motor which in turn turns the engine over fast enough for it to start. Once the vehicle starts the alternator recharges the battery and provides power for all accessories on the vehicle. Without a battery you could not start the engine. Vehicles built in the late 1800s and early 1900s did not have a battery and were started with a hand crank. The engine used a magneto to keep running.
