the air panels are designed to bring in fresh air from outside unless you put the middle selector to Max A/C where it will recycle the air from inside of the car. On warm air case you don't have an option. Siamand
On a 1996 Ford Explorer : The air conditioner compressor is on the drivers side of the engine , it's at the front of the engine and isone of the accessories that is driven by the serpentine belt

I believe it goes in the front right side of the block on a 4.0 V-6. You have to remove the softplug, but before you do that drain the coolant and then you will be able to install the block heater.
