I had oil on a spark plug outside the cylinder. It turns out that there are gaskets around each of the spark plug holes and one of them had been incorrectly installed and was leaking. If you are getting oil on the cylinder end of the spark plug you probably have worn piston rings that are letting oil in from the crankcase side of the cylinder. If you can see the oil, the leak is probably pretty bad since the cylinder, if it is firing at all, is not burning the oil off. If the car smokes or eats oil without an apparent dripping leak, then this is probably your problem. I consider myself fairly handy and I would not attempt this repair on my own, and I believe you need special tools to make this repair.

Oil on the outside of the spark plugs is caused by a leaking valve cover gasket. Replace the valve cover gasket. Oil on the electrode of the spark plugs indicates the engine is worn and is burning oil. The only fix for this is an engine rebuild.
