if it smokes just when started and then quits smoking, it may have to much oil in it, check oil level, if it keeps on smoking then you have a ring problem what TYPE of oil you have in it, When they are shipped there is oil injected into the bores through the spark plug holes, this will burn off for a while, so if it's new then it's no problem.

This information i was told at a Sears store. hope its correct.

I used 10 W 30 for 15 years in my 13 1/2 Briggs & Stratton and it still runs like new It's a 1997 Sears. I just replaced the top gear on the starter because of age, it broke in half, but had do to wear on it and replaced my muffler gasket, that it besides changing blades once and the belt for the blades. Not bad for 15 years on a $1,500 lawn mower, and I thanks God all the time, because someone else bought it new and the started didn't work so they brought it back and I got it as reconditioned for $417.oo, God is awesome! So, I just bought a brand new mower, Briggs & Stratton, and it is idling up and down. It started doing it about a week after I bought it, so I changed the spark plug and it fixed the idling problem momentarily, then started doing it again. I googled it and confirmed that my mower is suffering from a rich mixture as you speak of above. My problem is....what can I do about that problem? Please advise me, anyone, thanks.
