You have a vacuum leak. This causes the vehicle to run lean, therefore the engines fuel system is compensating by delivering more fuel. The brakes don't feel right as they have a vacuum booster that assists the driver (making it easier) to stop. Since you have a vacuum leak, the brakes are directly affected.

What's it smell like? A hot brake shoe? Check for proper brake adjustment -or- check for a weak return spring -or- check for partially applied emergency brake. Does it smell like hot metal or hot oil? Check for rear a bad rear wheel bearing. Is it a 4WD or 2WD? Check for proper level of fluid in differential.
