your alternator is not charging
On that year you can just unhook the battery cable for about 10 mins. BUT if you don't FIX the problem that made it come on in the first place then it will just come back on again.

break lines need to be replaced, check the battery cables to if that's not it then the battery may just need charged

Disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes. Note that the light will just come back on unless you repair the problem.

Either the new alternator is dead, belt slippage or there is a wiring problem. The Globe could also be of the wrong value. On really early cars the globe is part of the circuit not just an indicator.
Could be that the bulb on the instrument panel burnt out. Pull the panel off just a few screws and check the bulb.
