replace your gas cap first - cheepest try. i had a crack in a vacuum hose that made it keep coming on. You have an emssions problem of some sort. It may be the gas cap and could be many other things. Unless you are knowledgable, take it to a professional if a new gas cap does not fix it. BTW, a loose gas cap will cause the light to come on. Tighten it 3 clicks.

Have vehicle scanned to determine the problem
Disconnecting the battery cable for a few minutes will reset the check engine light. If the light comes back on you will have to get the issue fixed or it will keep coming on.
If the check engine light is coming on it is because you have a problem with the emissions system. Have the ECU scanned to retrieve the code that has been set. This code will tell you what part is being effected and may help you diagnose the problem.

That is the same as the check engine light. You will need to have the system checked for codes to know possible causes.
