For the higher end market there is John Lewis who sell the well regarded Smeg range of flueless gas fires. Alternatively for the lower end of the market B&Q or Hombase both offer reasonably priced flueless gas fires and have a range of stores throughout the UK.
They vary enormously, from as low as 25% for a background heat only (eg: 6.9Kw burend but only 2Kw out to the room). to 85% (or even 100% for a flueless fire (VERY expensive). Go to a showroom and read the brochures!
It can kill you if you smell too much of it.
a lot
A gas called mercaptan is added which contains sulfur and has a foul smell. Adding this gas allows people to smell when there is a natural gas leak. If you find this strong smell in your house you should get out and call the Fire Dept. immediately.
Call the police, fire dept or Con Edison or all 3.
You probably have a gas leak, Have it checked out NOW before it catches on fire.
If you gas fire smells it is VERY IMPORTANT that you stop using it immediately and that you get a professional, qualified gas fire engineer to come and service it and check the flue. The reason for this is that a faulty fire can produce a gas called Carbon Monoxide (CO) which you can not smell or taste. This gas will kill you and is responsible for may "faulty fire" related deaths a year. The fact that you can smell kerosene from the fire indicates that fumes are leaking back into your living area and the likelihood is that CO is too. STOP USING THE FIRE!
A smell, typically a sulfur-like scent called mercaptan, is added to natural gas to help detect leaks. Natural gas is colorless and odorless, so adding a smell makes it easier for people to identify gas leaks by scent. This is an important safety measure to alert individuals to potential gas leaks before they become dangerous.
A gasoline smell in a 2001 Ford Focus right after fueling could mean there is a leak in the gas line. This should be checked out as soon as possible, as it could be a fire hazard.
That happened to me I lit a match, chucked it in and hoped for the best.... :D(ended up calling fire brigade)B. The gas smell will eventually leave the inside of the car if you leave the windows down. I've added a related link to a webpage with a lot of recipes that will help you get rid of the gas smell and make the inside of your car smell better.
IMPORTANTIt is essential that you get your fire and chimney checked out by a gas certified plumberimmediately.DO NOT continue to use the gas fire until this has been done, it could kill you if you do.If a gas fire (or chimney) develops a fault it can release Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas into your rooms - you can not see this or smell it but it is a deadly poison. All gas appliances should be serviced once a year. If you live in the United Kingdom and rent your house, it is a legal requirement that your landlord has a Gas check done once a year and to give you a copy of the certificate to prove the installations are safe.I have put a link to CO poisoning below.
