The firing of the spark plugs must be balanced. The plugs fire when the cylinder reaches top dead center (TDC) on the upstroke or compression stroke. The cylinders are not numbered serially, so the plugs cannot fire serially. If you look at the inside of an average V8 you can easily see why that would not be possible. Click the link.

This isto minimize unbalanced torque and thus vibration which also reduces wear.
