In a line of 100 cars lined up bumper-to-bumper, there are 99 pairs of touching bumpers. Each car, except for the first and the last, shares a bumper with the car in front of it. Therefore, only the cars in between contribute to the touching bumpers, resulting in 99 touching bumpers.
