The advantage to using a rotary engine like the Wankel engine in marine applications is its high RPM, and low maintenance (compared to the average internal combustion engine). However, so far, current marine uses for the Wankel engine have been limited to racing and consumer applications due to its singularly high performance and its tendency to guzzle gas. These traits currently inhibit it from the commercial ship market.
