if your abs light is also on it is the abs sensor located in the rear end housing one bolt to replace part is about 25$ at the dealer
The speedometer and odometer are electrically operated. There is no mechanical connection to the drivetrain. If there is no power, they don't work.
We had the same problem, and our 1998 F150 needed a new instrument cluster.
if i remember correctly they did not start using an electronic speedometer in f150's till 1992 so your vehicle should still have a mechanical speedometer which has a cable ran down to your transmission. the sensor on the rear differential on those models is an abs sensor on 92 and later its the abs and speed sensor.
The thermostat may be stuck open.
It goes from you speedometer down you engine bay to the transfer case (if that's a 4X4) or into your transmission (4X2)
The headlights in the Ford F150 may have stopped working due to a bad fuse or bulb. Check these and if it doesn't fix the problem visit a mechanic.
most likely would be a bad turn signal flasher
under the dash, above the radio. take out speedometer module to get to it

One reason a 1989 F-150 may not start is a bad battery.
