Depends on your year, and likely the spedometer is reacting to a fault in the speed contoller, or fault with spedometer cable. What code(s) do you pull with testing? My 2000 E250 has an issue with the individual wheel speed sensor, causes abs light to come on and stay on, but no issues with spedometer, however if yours is newer (digital odometer, sounds newer), follow the cable from the spedometer to the speed controller, and it's bracket, check connections, or resistance in ohms. Try another question at the Ford truck forum, once you know the codes.

my 1999 alero speedomter started going crazy too and they replaced the wheel speed sensor and it still does it must be a short in the wire.
Where is the odometer cable located?
Not sure what kind/year of car you have. The odometer and speedometer are both driven by the same cable. The cable goes forward from the back of the speedometer, throught the fire wall and down to the transmission. You should be able to see where the cable protrudes through the firewall. Some cars use an electrical transducer instead of a cable. The transducer is mounted in the transaxel, has an electrical cable and connector going to it, probably two wires. The speedometer on this system is electronic and receives an electrical signal from the transducer. There is nothing different looking about the speedometer to immediatly indicate which system you have. Good Luck

Since the SPEEDOMETER shows how fast you're currently going, then to turn it back you would just have to put on the brakes, or drive slower. Your ODOMETER shows how many Kms or Miles you've driven and it CANNOT be turned back LEGALLY.

Just took my 1996 Camry to the Toyota dealership, my odometer was clicking off 1.6 miles for every road mile. I was informed that my speedometer was reading 70mph and actual was 67 mph (not bad). The fix is a $500 odometer cluster per the dealership. It is the 2nd one the dealership has a record of going bad. It is not a high failure part. Consider yourself one of the lucky folks that may end up withh a million mile Camry.
