Just had a very similar situation with a 93 Tarus GL 3.0. When I disconnected the positive post on the alternator the 3.1 amp draw dropped down to almost nothing. New alternator fixed the problem. I didn't check the internal cause because the alternator was an Autozone with lifetime warranty from three years back. I did check aproximately 20 ohms continuity from the positive post to the single wire connection by the rear bearing. Hope this helps.
