Car battery will not stay charged

There could be many causes for this problem. Some of them include:

  • Corroded battery terminals and/or terminal clamps on the battery cables.
  • A worn out or defective battery.
  • "Bad" [loose, or badly CORRODED] connection connections, as at wiring harness connectors, or ground connections.
  • A cut or broken wire(s) anywhere in the charging circuit.
  • An alternator [or generator] belt which is adjusted to loose, allowing the slipping belt to not properly spin the alternator.
  • A fault anywhere within your car electrical system that cause electricity to flow when the engine is off, and even when the key is turned off.
  • A defective alternator or voltage regulator [the regulator is sometimes in the alternator, or sometimes a separate device in the engine compartment].

There are probably several other possible causes, but these are the ones that come to mind at the moment.

I suggest that you take your vehicle to one of the major auto parts supply stores to have your electrical and charging system tested. They usually have portable testing gear and can run the tests on your vehicle in their parking lot. Normally, there is no charge for this service.

If this service is not available in your area, then it can be done at any automotive mechanical/electrical repair shop, but generally they do not do it for free.

If your battery is good and you know your car is draining it then yes, disconnecting your battery from your car will keep your battery charged for much longer than 3 days. Your battery should stay charged way longer than 3 days in normal conditions being hooked up to your car. You should get it checked out and figure out what is draining your battery so fast.
