The P0440 code is for an EVAP system leak. This code sets when the vehicle's computer detects that the EVAP system cannot seal itself after running the onboard diagnostic test that it runs at random times once enable criteria has been satisfied. The problem could be something as simple as a loose gas cap or an inoperatve purge or vent solenoid or as complex as a wiring issue or as expensive as a powertrain control module (PCM) the vehicle's computer. Always perform a visual inspection of the EVAP system prior to replacing any parts, because guessing can get to be very expensive rather quickly. As I mentioned make sure the gas cap is adequately tightened and if you are somewhat mechanically knowledgeable follow all of the lines coming off the fuel tank to where they end paying close attention to good connections or any physical damage such as a crack, split or broken line.
