you more than likely have internal transmission damage(burned clutches,bands,steels...etc), unfortunatley theres no easy way around that problem. Your best bet would be to find a suitable replacement trans or see if you can find someone to rebuild it for a resonable price. Either way it is going to be a pricey situation.

Could a rear-wheel drive car fishtail as a result of the engine shifting gears and applying more force to the drive wheels than the steering wheels are prepared for?

In a word, yes. When an engine shifts gears, especially in older cars, it is possible for the tires to begin spinning. This happens alot when pulling away from a dead stop. If you're actually driving the car and the gears shift on a slick or icy road, they the rear tires could begin spinning and you can loose control of the car.

Why is your motorcycle stalling when you try to rode it?

may sound oblique but as most motorcycles have a 1n234.... gearbox system , from nuetral its only one notch either way to engage a gear. if you go up, its second gear and pullaways will be more prone to stutters and stalls (extreme example, try pulling away in top gear)
