How do you brake safely with hand brakes?

You would push down on both the front brake and the back brake. You would want to put a little more pressure on the back brake and slowly add pressure to the front brake. If you slam on the front brakes there is a possibility that you will fly over the handle bars. I know from experience and it is not fun. I hope this helped.

Does releasing pressure from the brake pedal result in a shift of weight to the front?

Yes, releasing pressure from the brake pedal can result in a shift of weight to the front of the vehicle. When the brakes are applied, weight is transferred to the front wheels due to inertia. When the brakes are released, this weight transfer is reversed, causing the vehicle's weight to shift back towards the rear. This dynamic is particularly noticeable during deceleration and acceleration phases in a vehicle's movement.

What is a brake compensator?

a brake compensator aka proportioning valve.do to the fact that the front brakes useually do 70 percent of the stopping the compensator reduces the pressure of the brake fluid from the master cylinder to the rear brakes being they need less hydraulic pressure to stop. it also acts as a saftey valve in case a brake hose or line bursts, it will let to brakes retain pressure for emergency stop
