How to Install Window Deflectors?

Window deflectors are attractive visual cues used to dress the windows and sunroof of an automobile. They make a great addition to almost every vehicle and provide practical value by allowing you to crack those windows open while minimizing wind, rain and noise. These factors have made window deflectors one of the most popular aftermarket car accessories.

Another great aspect of window deflectors is that they are extremely simple to install. You don’t need any special skill and they’re easy enough that even someone with “all thumbs” can manage a professional-looking installation. Despite this, everyday thousands of people throw money away paying exorbitant installation fees at car accessory shops.

First, park your car somewhere convenient and out of the way but make sure there’s room to work comfortably. Work in the garage or under an overhang if possible. Now gather the necessary tools. You will need at least a flathead screwdriver, a Phillips head screwdriver, and pair of pliers. Make sure to verify with the included instructions that your deflectors don’t have any additional requirements. For instance, some deflectors may use different screw heads, such as Allen head screws.

Now, roll down all the windows where you’ll be attaching the deflectors. Work on one window at a time and work at the slowest pace that feels comfortable. Insert the flathead screwdriver’s tip between the window frame and the rubber seal. It’s easiest to start near the mirror. You’re going to peel back the bottom part of the seal first and then the top. The stripping will just pop out as you go and will pop back in just as easily later.

Next, there will be a series of clips included with the deflector. Attach those to the seam where the rubber seal was mounted. They are lettered or numbered so that you will know in which order to place them. Start at the right side of the window and work to the left. Don’t worry about placement. Just get them mounted properly. Once all of the brackets are in place, you can reinsert the rubber seal using the flathead screwdriver.

You’ve done the hard part. Those brackets provide the frame to which you will attach the deflector. Now, line the holes drilled in the deflector up to the brackets. They probably will not line up perfectly at first. Just slide the brackets along the doorframe until they do. Now use the screws included and mount the deflector to the brackets. You’re done. That’s all there is to it, certainly not worth paying $25 per window or more for.
