The name of the wife of Bartolomeu Dias [c. 1450-May 29, 1500] is unknown, at least outside of Portugal. For information on the identity of the mother of Dias' two sons isn't forthcoming. But both of Dias' sons, Simao and Antonio, had as last names Dias de Novais. Novais is a parish of Vila Nova Famalicao, which is a municiipality in the northern Portuguese district of Braga. So Novais may have been the home town of Dias and/or his wife. For Antonio married Joana Fernandez, whom Portuguese historians have described as his relative. So it's possible that Dias also had married a relative. And it's also possible that the exact information on his bride's name, and on the date and place of their wedding ceremony, can be found in an archive in Portugal, or among the records of the Catholic Church. For Dias was Catholic, and his son became a Knight of the Order of Christ. But what isn't possible is finding answers from the information that's passed down through the generations of a family. For Dias' line went extinct with his great granddaughters, Dona Paula de Novais and Dona Violante de Castro, neither of whom married or had children.
