Knights often worked for lords of castles, but sometimes they had their own castles. A knight would go out to bloody wars where if he was not killed, probably one of his comrades was. They earned about two shillings a day. Some knights had their own mini-armies called mercenaries, and lords could pay them to fight for the lord.
Castles and knights were prominent during the Medieval period in Europe. This period ranged from the 5th to 15th century and ended around the time when gunpowder became widely used on the battlefield.
