What happened in the book Marked from the House of Night series?

My honest opinion? It's an absolute mess. A boring, horrific, badly-done mess.

The actual plot of the story follows the life of a "Zoey Redbird" whose real last name is not Redbird but she borrowed it from her grandmother because it's like so kewl. Apparently there's a school for fledgling vampyres and she gets chosen to attend it. The way you can tell a fledgling vampyre is by the crescent moon that appears on the forehead. Once in attendance at the school, Zoey meets several people whose names I can't remember because they're so dreadfully dull and uninspired and finds herself caught in an epic love quadrangle between a boy named Erik who, as she reminds us several times throughout the novel, looks like Superman, and a professor who's really creepy and probably a closet pervert, and a boy named Heath who is so ordinary he's barely worth mentioning.

Zoey discovers that she is the chosen one (why am I not surprised?) and has the power to control all the elements. Her buddy, who is so fabulous, spouts complicated verbiage ad naseum to prove just how smart he is. Then she and her oh-so-predictable friends go on oh-so-predictable adventures to defeat evil.

Now for the unbiased summary: The world of Zoey Redbird is much like that of any teenager, except for the fact that certain teenagers become vampyres because of a strand of junk DNA that somehow is activated in them. The process of becoming a vampire takes four years, so the "fledglings" must attend a special boarding school to learn about being a vampyre. 1 in 10 fledglings die because their bodies cannot handle the change, but the ones that do survive are rewarded with strength, beauty, and powers. In Marked, Zoey meets a girl named Aphrodite who invites her to join the Dark Daughters, an exclusive group. Aphrodite only invites her to humiliate her, but it doesn't quite work out that way.

Zoey imprints on Heath later on. Zoey then realizes that she can control the five elements: water, fire, air, earth, and spirit (after she sees the spirits of dead fledglings at a Goddess ritual).

Zoey meets a boy named Erik Night, who is Aphrodite's ex-boyfriend, and they become very close. Later on, Erik and Zoey kiss. At another Dark Daughters meeting, Zoey realizes that Aphrodite had been using her powers for evil and stops her. The principal of the House of Night sees this and strips Aphrodite of her title of Leader of the Dark Daughters and High Pristress in Training and gives it to Zoey.
