It may have been rebuilt before. It's probably bore number if rotating assembly was balanced to make sure they stayed on the right journals. (weight added/removed from rods) Check to see if weight added anywhere. it could also be a quickie ring change was done & someone wanted to correspond each piston w/it's cap & not regrind crank.

Where is the piston ring on a Ford Escort?

On the pistons, in the block. If they are bad, it's time for an engine rebuild.

Do you have to change all pistons if only 1 is bad?

I HAVE NEVER CHANGED PISTONS IN AN AUDI, BUT IN AMERICAN CARS YES AND WE HAVE HAD PLENTY OF BAD PISTONS AND WE DIDN'T ALWAYS CHANGE ALL OF THEM, ONLY THE ONES THAT NEEDED CHANGING. ANOTHER FACTOR IS BASED ON THE MILEAGE ON THAT (ENGINE). MY BEST GUESS IS ,IF THE ENGINE HAS LESS THAN 100K MILES CHANGE ONLY THE ONES THAT NEED CHANGING. UNLESS ITS MORE THAN HALF OF THE AMOUNT OF PISTONS IN THE ENGINE, CHANGE ONLY THE BAD ONES, IF YOU ARE DOING IT YOURSELF. A GARAGE MAY WANT TO REBUILD THE WHOLE ENGINE, MAINLY FOR WARRENTY PURPOSES. GOOD LUCK. I HOPE THIS HELP SOME.

How do you change pistons on a Mitsubishi gto 3000?

Call a mechanic. This is not an "at home" type of repair. To replace pistons, you must tear the entire engine down, and replace all gaskets and bearings. I assume you are thinking of lower compression pistons for a turbo build up. Don't bother. Buy a complete engine with the turbo and duct work from a wreck, if available. You could spend more trying to rebuild yours.

Does rebuilding an engine increase performance?

Rebuilding an engine can potentially increase performance, especially if the rebuild includes upgrades like higher compression pistons, performance camshafts, or improved intake and exhaust systems. A rebuild also allows for the replacement of worn-out components, improving efficiency and reliability. However, the overall performance gain depends on the quality of the rebuild, the parts used, and the tuning of the engine afterward. Without modifications, a rebuild may simply restore the engine to its original performance levels rather than enhance them.

How do you change the rings on the pistons?

The pistons and connecting rods have to be disconnected from the crankshaft, then removed from the top of the engine block. The oil pan and heads will have to be removed to gain access.
