Well one has the word barrel in front of it. duhhh
A shifter is a device that moves the gears in a transmission to change the gear ratio, while a barrel shifter is a digital circuit that shifts data bits in binary logic operations. The main difference is their intended use: a shifter is used in mechanical systems to change speed or torque, while a barrel shifter is used in digital systems for data manipulation.
remove access plate on floor around shifter, 4 bolts hold the shifter onto the trans.
To tighten the shifter cable on your bike, first locate the barrel adjuster on the shifter or derailleur. Turn the barrel adjuster clockwise to tighten the cable. Test the shifting to ensure it is working properly. If needed, fine-tune the adjustment until the shifting is smooth and accurate.

To fix a loose shifter cable on your bicycle, you can adjust the tension of the cable using the barrel adjuster located near the shifter or derailleur. Turn the barrel adjuster clockwise to tighten the cable or counterclockwise to loosen it until the shifting feels smooth and precise. If the cable is frayed or damaged, it may need to be replaced.
A barrel shifter is a digital circuit that can shift a data word by a specified number of bits in one clock cycle. It can be implemented as a sequence of multiplexers(mux.), and in such an implementation the output of one mux is connected to the input of the next mux in a way that depends on the shift distance. For example, take a four-bit barrel shifter, with inputs A, B, C and D. The shifter can cycle the order of the bits ABCD as DABC, CDAB, or BCDA; in this case, no bits are lost. That is, it can shift all of the outputs up to three positions to the right (and thus make any cyclic combination of A, B, C and D). The barrel shifter has a variety of applications, including being a useful component in microprocessors.
Should be a push in, at the end of the shifter arm.
To change the shifter cable on a 1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette, first you need to disconnect the cable from the shifter, then disconnect it from the engine's control arm. Then replace it with the new cable and make sure it is functioning.
There is a plastic rod inside of the shifter arm, it unlocks the shifter from the park position when the button on the shifter handle is pressed. So, press in on the shifter button and pull the shift handle straight UP (you might have to pull hard). You should be able to remove the broken pieces of the plastic rod with some wire. You might have to go to a junk yard for a replacement.
1. Lift the shift tower cover off the center console 2. at the passenger side of the shifter & down into the center console there will be a mechanism with a small plastic arm pointing at a metal pin. 3. Swing the small plastic arm so it is no longer pointing at the pin & press the shifter button. You should now be able to freely move the shifter as normal. If you place the shifter in park again, you may have to rotate the plastic arm again if you need to select a different gear again.
Maybe brake shift cable from brake to gear shifter?
