If it is a 383 CID then it probley has a carburetor on it. Remove the air cleaner and lay your hand over the top of the carburetor and have someone crank the engine over while they hold the gas pedal all the way to the floor. It should suck in on your hand at ALL times while turning over. If you fill fuel or air blowing against you hand then the timing has jumped. It should NEVER blow out the top of the carburetor, it should always be sucking in. NOTE- Be sure to unhook the coil when running this test. There is other ways to check this. but this is the easiest.
