An Aniline style leather will be absorbent and a pigment coated leather is not so the easiest way to tell is to put a bit of water on the leather and see whether it soaks in or sits on the surface. If you want to fully check the type of leather you have check here http://www.lttsolutions.net/whattypeofleather.asp

What is aniline leather?

Semi-aniline leather is more durable than aniline whilst still retaining a natural appearance. The increased durability is provided by the application of a light surface coating which contains a small amount of pigment. This ensures consistent colour and imparts some stain resistance.

What in the process can cause leather to fade in color?

When leather is produced it is dyed with aniline dyes before any other surface finishes are added. Aniline style leathers (those that have no pigment coating added) are more prone to fading from sunlight and in some cases this can happen quite quickly and quite dramatically. It is an easy problem to fix as Aniline dyes can be used to restore the colour Using a quality leather protector that contains UV protection can help to slow this process down.

How do you different good cowhide leather and bad cowhide leather?

The best quality leather is known as Full Grain. This is the top split of the leather (also known as the hair split) but where no buffing, sanding or correcting has taken place. The Full Grain then can be pigment coated or aniline dyed. This will always be the softest and best quality leather, it will also be the most expensive. Cheaper quality leather comes from the top split but has been sanded or buffed (corrected) to remove imperfections and then pigment coated or finished. This will always be a lower quality product but can be hard wearing.

Is leather absorbent?

All leather must allow the movement of moisture back and forth (transpiration) otherwise it is not leather. The degree of absorbency will be affected by the amount and type of finishing products that have been used on the leather during the retanning process. Moisture is crucial to keeping leather in good condition and water based products are good for keeping the balance correct. Aniline style leathers are more absorbent than Pigment Coated Leather but all leather finishes still have to allow moisture to get to the leather and are designed to allow this to happen. Absorbency can be tested by putting a few drops of water onto the surface of the leather. If the water soaks in and leaves a dark mark it is likely to be an aniline style leather, if it beads on the surface the leather has some type of finish on the surface. The rate of absorbency is a good indicator to technicians of the type of leather they are dealing with and is one of the 5 step process that is used during leather identification.

How can you identify the leather type?

To the untrained eye, its virtually impossible to identify each leather by its type. There is a huge variety and some have subtle differences. But in general, you can break it into two large groups - Finished and Unfinished.Finished: The leather has a topical pigment coat applied. One of the most common coatings consists of a soft acrylic color coating under a urethane clear coating (for durability). These resins create a film that bonds to the surface of the leather. It's primary goal is to protect the leather, providing wear, stain, and fade resistance.Finished leather will resist staining by water- or oil-based agents (if a drop of water is put directly on the leather surface, the water bead remains on the surface, and does not soak in and darken the material.) The clear coating mentioned above determines the final reflective value of the leather surface (ranging from high gloss, all the way down to a matte or dull finish, depending how much dulling agent is added to the clear coat resin before application), so sheen is not necessarily a help in determining leather type. Generally, finished leathers do not have that "buttery soft" leather feel (or hand) associated with raw leather. Also note, finished leathers can be described as aniline-dyed, and still have a topical pigment applied. Finished leathers are much less susceptible to fading.Unfinished: The leather does not have a topical pigment applied, or has a minimal resin coating to retain the hand of raw leather. The color is achieved by immersing hides in aniline dyes that are absorbed into the leather, accentuating the natural beauty of the hide. Because leather's absorption characteristics are not uniform, variations in color are common. The water drop test will result in the drop transferring into the leather, darkening or staining the area. Because unfinished leathers are colored using organic aniline dyes, they are much more susceptible to fading (caused by UV exposure).

What is the kinds of leather?

All leather is basicaly the same once a skin/hide has gone through the tanning process. It is waht they then do to the finish that will determine the type of leather it falls into. Although there are 3 basic categories: Anilne, Protected, Nubuck these days these terms are too generalised as the range of finishes is enormous. This is a good guide to the types of leather http://www.lttleathercare.co.uk/typesofleather.asp

What are different between colorful eyes and dark eyes when born?

There is no major difference, its just that dark eyes have Iris with a dark pigment layer. Its not that the other colorful eyes don't have the pigment layer, they do but because the color of pigment layer differ therefore color of eye differ. Blue eyes don't have pigment.
