To adjust the valves on a 17 hp Briggs & Stratton Intek engine, first, ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the spark plug. Remove the valve cover to access the valves. Use a feeler gauge to measure the valve clearance; the intake valve should typically be set to 0.004-0.006 inches, while the exhaust valve is usually set to 0.006-0.008 inches. Adjust the clearance by loosening the lock nut and turning the adjusting screw until the correct clearance is achieved, then re-tighten the lock nut and replace the valve cover.
Valves 21 hp Briggs and Stratton Intek V Twin can be adjusted by increasing the torque on screw band with a right rotation. This can eliminate some leaking problems.
