yes you do have to remove the axle. but before you do make sure that is the problem. you are more than likely hearing a roaring sound. if the truck is extended cab it has a hanger bearing and when goes bad it can easily be miss taken for an axle bearing. the parking brake shoes(not the brake pads) can also make that sound.
