first crank the bike. (with battery charger if need be) then disconect the battery while its running. if the bike goes dead this means that the only thing feeding your spark plugs and coil is the juice from the battery and you have problem with the magneto most likely. if the bike remains running after you disconect the battery you should still check the voltage in the battery leads (the wires you disconected, not the battery) with a volt meter. if the system is "charging" it should give you better than 12 volts. these two things should tell you if you have to look further.
