To check the ECM (Engine Control Module) on a 2001 Kia Sportage, you can use an OBD-II scanner to read any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the system. First, locate the OBD-II port under the dashboard near the driver's seat, plug in the scanner, and turn the ignition to the "On" position without starting the engine. Follow the scanner's instructions to retrieve codes and assess the ECM's functionality. If no codes are present and issues persist, further inspection of wiring and connections may be necessary.

inside the passenger side floor board, where the passenger puts there feet, pull back carpet and you will see it. But the transmission computer is behind the driver side brake pedal just above it.
To reset the throttle position sensor (TPS) on a 1999 Kia Sportage, first disconnect the vehicle's battery for about 10-15 minutes to clear the engine control module (ECM) memory. Reconnect the battery, then start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes without pressing the accelerator. This allows the ECM to recalibrate the TPS. If issues persist, consider checking for error codes or inspecting the sensor and its connections for any faults.
The ecm or engine control module aka powertrain control module is located on the floor under the dash. You can pick up used ones on ebay...
Yes it will the 1.5 and 1.6 share the same engine wiring harness and ecm. It is a direct bolt in.

This May Help; If You Did Not Remove The Negetive Cable First, When Removing The Old Battery And Connect It Last When Installing The New Battery; You May Have Blown Your Computer ( ECM ). Have A Good Mechanic Look At It For You. GOOD LUCK
Well, honey, you'll find the ECM (Engine Control Module) and TCM (Transmission Control Module) units on a 2000 Kia Sportage typically located under the hood near the engine or firewall. They're those little brain boxes that make sure your engine and transmission play nice. Just remember to disconnect the battery before you start poking around in there, unless you're into playing with sparks.
Mine did the same thing. Took it it Kia service center, after three days of them putting in parts, such as new fuel pump and tank, starter etc. they found out that a little relay, buried somewhere but very important to running, was not working. They replaced that and ran good since. Thank God it was still under warrenty so I paid for no labor or the new parts that they left in. My 2001 Sportage also did not start. I tried everything and finally paid $80 to have a garage put it on a computer. They told me the ECM (electronic control module - THE BRAIN) was bad. They also told me that part is covered under warranty by some Federal thing and Kia replaced it FREE OF CHARGE! They also paid for the towing of the vehicle to the dealership. The car is 5 yrs. old and they still covered it.
it is located on the floor under the stero
