An engine that shakes at idle is usually caused by something affecting combustion or airflow. The fix depends on the actual cause, but the most common ones are worn spark plugs, dirty fuel injectors, vacuum leaks, bad engine mounts, or a dirty throttle body.
I had a car that would vibrate badly whenever I stopped at red lights, but it drove almost normally once I accelerated. I first assumed it was a transmission problem, but after some troubleshooting and advice from a technician familiar with repairs at Bergman’s Auto Repair, the real issue turned out to be a cracked vacuum hose and old spark plugs.
A few practical things to check first are:
If the shaking gets worse with the AC on or while stopped in gear, that can also help narrow down the problem. Catching it early usually prevents more expensive repairs later.
Probably a misfire, it could be in need of a tune up.
Possible cylinder misfire and/or failing engine mounts.
It could be (a) misfiring cylinder(s). Check the condition of your plugs and wires. Also, check if your engine mounts are not worn.
If it is running fine at high revs the most likely problem is an injector
Without much to go on, I would suggest you look for a vacuum leak, especially if the engine runs good under acceleration and only shakes and shudders at idle.
The most probable reason for the engine to shake at idle is the motor mounts may need replaced. This is generally from the front and rear motor mounts; however, the sides may need replaced as well.
check your idle control valve located behind the engine
when the engine starts and is warming up the idle is supposed to be at around 1500 rpm but when the engine warms up the idle should drop to between 700 and 1000 rpm. if it doesnt drop then see a mechanic because it is a very complicated fix
If your car shakes when stopped in drive but not in park, it may indicate an issue with the engine mounts or transmission. Worn engine mounts can allow excessive engine movement, causing vibrations during idle in gear. Additionally, it could be related to a vacuum leak, misfiring engine, or problems with the idle air control valve. It's advisable to have a mechanic diagnose the issue to ensure safe operation.
Do u mean that the car shakes as you are driving, or just that the engine shakes when it is at idle ? Could use more info.
A 1998 Honda Civic shakes when it idles usually due to worn engine mounts. Open the hood and check the engine mounts. See if they are either cracked or brittle. Since the mounts can not absorb the vibrations it will be felt in the cabin.
Let it idle when moving and get back to us.
