Well, I don't mean to sound snarky, but when it doesn't work anymore! The thermostat, in its most basic form, is just a switch to turn the heater on. If the heater turns on and off like it should, it is OK. If the heater doesn't turn on, or worse yet doesn't turn off, you should look into getting a new one. Some tests you can perform: Heater doesn't turn on? Get at the wires running to the thermostat and touch the two control wires (You will have to look into the furnace documentation if you have more than two wires) together. If the furnace clicks on, it's the thermostat. If it doesn't, it's the furnace. Heater doesn't turn off? When the furnace is running disconnect one of the control wires. If the furnace shuts off it's the thermostat. If it doesn't, it's the furnace.
Need to know which engine you have.

You do not need to replace a water pump and thermostat at the same time. These parts do not ruin each other.
It is within the water outlet which is at the bottom of the top radiator hose. Mark
You know you need a thermostat when your heating or cooling system is not maintaining a consistent temperature, leading to discomfort in your home. Additionally, if you frequently adjust the temperature manually or notice that your energy bills are unusually high, it may indicate that a thermostat is necessary. Upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat can also improve energy efficiency and convenience.
Two problems that I can think of are you need to add some antifreeze or you need to replace the thermostat. NEED to know what you are working on.

There's a gasket between the thermostat and the block that you need to replace.

I don't know about the 4 Cylinder, but the 2.5L V6 1999 626 has the thermostat on the lower hose area, where it attaches to the engine/thermostat housing. To replace it, I had to take the entire air box out. It took a bit of work. You also need to take off the heat pipe mount attached to the engine in order to pull the thermostat housing apart. Not the easiest job for a thermostat replacement.
To change the thermostat, you first need to get a new one. Then you can take it out and replace with the new one.
