Not knowing what the vehicle is, if you can insert the key and it allows you to turn the mechanism, the key is okay.
No, You do not need a key fob to start a car. When starting a car, you put the key in the ignition and turn. Power comes from car battery, not from the key fob battery!

You will know if your car key has a chip in it by checking your vehicle's owners manual. You can also check with the dealership where you purchased the car. You cannot tell by the appearance of the key.
I believe that means the cars computer shuts it self down because it thinks its being stolen, cause of this use of the wrong key in ignition, use of key that hasn't been programed specifically for your car, fault in the key you are using call dealer and ask, i imagine your car isn't starting at all.
A key not programed for the car will cause the computer to lock out and not allow the car to run. Many cars require a visit to the dealer to be reset if this happens. If this is what you mean by damage then yes

Clean the resister on the key with alchohol, dry and try to start the car.
Put the key in your ignition, turn it so the dashboard lights come on, without starting the car. A yellow light saying ABS will come on if you have antilock. Also sometimes the car manufactures put ABS on the break pedal.
Ensure the resistor on key is centered (in key) and when you try to start car make sure "security" light is off. If it goes on do not try starting car, just wait for it to go off before re-starting.
If you have immobilizer in your car, sure it will prevent your from starting.
