Loosen the belt tensioner. The belt should not be tight at all.

To install: 10. Install the alternator in position on the engine and connect the electrical leads. 11. Install the alternator support bracket, tighten the retaining bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). 12. Install the power steering reservoir on the mounting bracket. 13. Install the alternator mounting bolts, tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). 14. Install the tensioner and tensioner mounting stud. Install the retaining nut on the exhaust manifold. 15. Install the alternator belt, insert a 1/2 in. extension into the square hole in the tensioner and turn the tensioner. Tighten the tensioner bolt. 16. Connect the negative battery cable.
Remove Air Cleaner Box Assembly to gain access to alternator, Loosen bolts on alternator mounting bracket to relax alternator, Push alternator towards block to relax belt and away from block to tighten. Now tighten alternator bolts while keeping tension on alternator.

Disconnect the Neg battery cable Label and detach all wiring from the alternator Remove the evap charcoal canister and mounting bracket from the engine compartment Loosen the mounting bolts, then remove the alternator drive belt from the pulley While supporting the alternator, remove the mounting bolts and lift the alternator up and out of the engine compartment To Install: Hold the alternator in position, then install the mounting bolts finger-tight position the alternator belt on the pulley then adjust the drive belt. Using a padded pry bar, push the alternator away from the engine until the belt has the proper tension ( about 1/4 - 1/3 in deflection under thumb pressure) Tighten the alternator mounting bolts to 17ft lbs (23 Nm) if you have a torque wrench, otherwise real tight but not so tight that you'll strip the threads in the alternator Reattach all wiring to the alternator Reinstall the evap charcoal mounting bracket and canister Connect the neg battery cable You'll need to readjust the clock and redo your radio settings
To remove the alternator from a 2000 Kia Sephia, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shock. Then, remove the serpentine belt by releasing tension on the tensioner pulley. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the mounting bolts securing the alternator to the engine. Finally, carefully lift the alternator out of its bracket and set it aside.

If it is a serpentine belt, the tension is automatically adjusted by the tension idler. If the belt is loose then the tensioner needs replacing. If it is a normal drive belt, then the alternator is mounted on a slotted bracket that allows you to adjust the position of the alternator. You can loosen the bolts and adjust the tension on the belt.

First disconnect the battery, Remove the wire attacked to the alternator bolt,(RED WIRE) remove the wire harness under the post, remove the belt 15mm wrench/socket will be needed for the belt tension pully, remove the top mounting bolt into the alternator thru the mount bracket, remove the lower mounting bolt into the alternator thru the mount brcket, remove the mounting bolt on the back of the alternator. its a simple replacement, to reinstall the alternator put all the mounting bolts back in the belt back on the wire plug back in the (RED WIRE)back on the wire post attack the battery. is also listed in the Haynes manual available at MOST auto part shops.
If it is a drive belt and not a serpentine belt is has no tensioner. You manually adjust the tension by normally adjusting tension by moving the alternator. Loosen to bolts holding the alternator in place and then adjust the tension. Tighten the bolts when the tension is right. If it is serpentine belt if you follow the belt around the the engine you will see the tensioner.
