I assume we are talking about a 5.0 motor. You need to remove the water pump and any accesories that will block access. The crank pulley will need to be removed as will the harmonic balancer. The cover is made from cast aluminum and bolted to the front of the motor plus has two bolts coming up through the oil pan. You will need to loosen all the bolts on the pan to allow it to drop down about 1/2 inch in order to remove the timing cover. If you plan on changing the cam--go ahead and align the timing marks on the cam and crank pulley before you pull the old cam out--this will save you some time when reassembling.
