does the engine still have the shroud around the fan? If that is missing, they WILL run hot!
If not, keeping a clean air filter, adequate anti-freeze/water mix, new spark plugs every year, oil changes on schedule. If it still runs hot when all this is done, I'd say it is time to trade it off and tell the buyer that it 'runs hot'. What do I know tho...
There are many reasons why a Jeep Wrangler is overheating. A leak in the radiator system will cause overheating. Too much pressure in the engine can cause overheating. A bad water pump or thermostat could cause overheating. The transmission can also cause overheating if it is leaking.

Overheating the engine shouldn't effect the transmission. Overheating the transmission could.

stop it from overheating
In order to stop the car from overheating, your going to have to find the underlying cause. If you do not have expertise in this area, you will have to find someone who does. Maybe a friend or a mechanic. I would recommend you do this immediately. Extreme overheating can damage the engine.
the usual suspect is your tensioner and belt kinda ran out. n it something to do with your automatic sensors.
It is possible for a 1989 Jeep to leak coolant from the surge tank if the vehicle is overheating. It is also possible that the surge tank has a crack in it.
Water is needed to stop the engine from overheating.
Replacing a bad water pump can help to stop a motor from overheating. Hopefully that was the cause of the overheating. If it does not stop the overheating, try replacing the thermostat. Make sure you have the proper mix of antifreeze and water, the radiator filled with it. Check the level of coolant FIRST. Next, the hoses, and third the thermostat. Then, disconnect a hose and see if, by starting the vehicle, if there's water pressure. If not, its water pump time!
