It's 630 miles from Oakland to Portland, and the drive takes about 10 hours if you just head up I-5, barring inclement weather. However, if you're like me, and enjoy scenery, but hate driving for more than 8 hours at a time, there's a longer, but more enjoyable way to get to Portland. What I do is stop and stay the night at Weed, CA (no, the name has nothing to do with that kind of weed), which is about 4 hours from Oakland. Then, instead of continuing up I-5, I go up Highway 97, which is a beautiful drive. After about 4 hours, you hit the town of Bend, OR, where the Deschutes brewery is located (a good pit stop, in my opinion). From Bend, take Highway 20 W to Highway 22 W to Salem, then I-5 N to Portland. This final leg takes about 3 hours.
