College isn't exactly the right place to become a mechanic if you are thinking about a traditional 4 year university. Some technical colleges offer an ASE certification in 2 years, depending on the specific field and level of training it requires. Certain programs such as the ones put on by UTI will certify you in basic mechanics of your choosing in just over 1 year but are far more costly than a local technical college.
