they are the same thing. "knocking" in an engine is the fuel igniting from the heat of compression of the fuel and the air together. in a desel engine this is how it is suposed to work because it has no spark plugs so the only way to ingite the fuel is by compressing the fuel and the air by a ratio of about 22 to 1. in a gas engine the fuel is ignitied by a spark plug, if you use low grade fuel the explosion can happen too early (before the spark plug ignites it) and cause a knocking noise in the engine whitch can cause dammage long tearm the typical compression ratio for a gas engine is 10 to 1. the more compression you have the higher grade fuel you need to prevent "knocking" whitch is why higher end cars need higher grade fuel because they have higher compression engines whitch make more horsepower with omperable size engines.

What is the different between petrol and diesel?

The difference is that diesel is more oily than petrol, and is cheaper to produce.

Why is diesel is not used in petrol engines?

Because diesel is ignited of heat and high high compresion not a spark on lower compresion petrol engine. If you use diesel in a petrol you will end up with your engine knocking and pre-detonation followed by your engine blowing up pretty bad.

Can petrol engine oil be used for a diesel engine?

No it cannot. Petrol and Diesel are different.

How can diesel be identified from petrol?

diesel vapors due not ignite like gasoline does. Also diesel has a totally different smell.

What is the color of petrol and diesel in petrol station?

Petrol is typically a light yellow or clear color, while diesel is usually a shade of green or light blue. The color is due to the different additives and dyes used to differentiate between the two types of fuel at petrol stations.

Why cant you use diesel in a petrol car?

Diesel fuel is designed for diesel engines, which have a different combustion process than petrol engines. Using diesel fuel in a petrol car can damage the engine components, as diesel fuel may not burn efficiently in a petrol engine, leading to poor performance and potential engine damage. Additionally, modern petrol cars are equipped with fuel systems designed specifically for petrol fuel, not diesel.

How can you separate petrol and diesel from crude oil?

Petrol and diesel can be separated from crude oil through a process called fractional distillation. Crude oil is heated in a distillation column, which allows the different components to evaporate at their specific boiling points. This process results in the separation of petrol and diesel, along with other refined products, based on their molecular weights.

Is petrol is used in diesel cars?

No, diesel engine require diesel fuel. Put petrol in a diesel engine and you will destroy it.

What is diesel and petrol used for?

diesel and petrol are source which is used to generate power.

Why is petrol engine RPM is greater than diesel engine?

for same power diesel engine produces more torque @ less rpm whereas petrol engine produces less torque @more rpm this difference is due to different combustion processes of diesel and petrol
