I live in California so this may apply to NC as well. Most state vehicle codes require you to have your license on you at ALL times while driving. However, police know that people forget or lose their licenses on occasion. Therefore, you will not go to jaii for not having a license on you. However, they will ask for your name and license number if you know it, ask for your address and compare it with their cruiser computer. If you told the truth then their computer will show you as a licensed driver and you'll probably get a ticket. In my case I got let go but was told not to do it again.
