I'm no expert but I too have old no. 2 fuel oil that led me to the same question. I found out that you should first test the tank for water content. Since water & oil don't mix the water will be at the bottom of the tank. There is a paste you can buy and when you apply it to a dipstick it will turn a certain color if there is water present. As far as the fuel oil being usable the answer is yes but beware of the water at the bottom ( if there is any) and also mixing equal parts of new oil with the old oil should make it okay to use.
