Any AC, house or car has a pressure switch in the system so that if there is not enough freon in it, the compressor will not come on. The fan will run, but that is all. It is just circulating the air. Nothing will be damaged in the system running it without freon.

To properly refill the freon in your window AC unit, you should first turn off the unit and unplug it. Then, locate the service valve on the unit and connect a refrigerant refill kit to it. Follow the instructions on the refill kit to add the appropriate amount of freon to the unit. Be careful not to overfill, as this can damage the unit. Once the freon is refilled, securely close the service valve and plug the unit back in.
