Check all of the fluid levels but if the smoke has stopped you are probably ok. Moisture could have burned off of the exhaust or something similar. Keep a watch to see if it happens again.

If its chain driven, Could be the timing chain tensioner! Does it also have a rattle driving the vehicle at around 2000 R.P.M?

No it is not an interference engine. I personally had a timing belt break in my 94 Escort LX while the car was being driven and it was simply replaced.
