either it does not charge the battery enough or it will charge it too much which will quickly cause the electrolyte in the battery to evaporate
Does alt. light stay on after car is shut off? If so could be voltage regulator is defective and overcharging battery when running Does light stay on after car is shut off? If so could be a bad voltage regulator--if so may be overcharging battery Check voltage readings at battery should be around 14.2 with car running -- if much higher than this voltage regulator is bad.
where is voltage regulator on 1990 lincoln town car
The voltage regulator may be on the alternator.
You will need to go to a repair shop and have them test the charging system.
A bad voltage regulator in the alternator. Depending on year make and model it may be outside or separate from the alternator.
how will I know my Voltage regulator is bad. I have replaced the starter and had the battery and alternator checked they are good. My car will start when it is colder outside but as the day gets hotter it will not start.. Can you help
I believe the voltage regulator should be on the back of the alternator
No, not if the battery is fully charged.
no
The voltage regulator on this car is part of the alternator and is easily removable with 3 screws.
Short answer: yes Long Answer: A bad Voltage Regulator can allow an overcharge to the battery. Your charging system should be running around 14.2 to 14.8 volts DC with the car running. A bad voltage regulator may allow up to 18 Volts DC to run through your system. Not good for your battery. Some vehicles have a separate Voltage Regulator and some are part of the Alternator. There is also a part in the Alternator called a Diode Trio that changes the AC voltage that the alternator produces to DC Voltage that your car's electrical system uses. Batteries don't like to be fed AC voltage, it can evaporate the electrolyte fluid.
Battery will either be overcharged and burn out numerous electrical components or battery will be undercharged and eventually won't have enough voltage to operate vehicle
